Privacy policy
Last updated: 28 October 2026
This privacy policy explains how Tobias Boner, the operator of KeyCrumb (“we”, “us”), handles personal data when you visit keycrumb.com or downloads.keycrumb.com (the “Website”) or contact us. KeyCrumb is a private, non-commercial project operated from Switzerland.
The Website offers optional Google Analytics to understand visits and useful interactions. Google tracking resources load only after you accept Analytics. Advertising is disabled. The KeyCrumb app works with Markdown files on your Mac and has no account and no telemetry.
1. Visiting the Website
The Website is a static site hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), using Amazon S3 for storage and Amazon CloudFront to deliver pages from servers near you.
When you open a page or download a file, your browser automatically sends technical information that is needed to deliver it: your IP address, the requested address, date and time, browser and operating system (user agent) and, if your browser sends it, the referring page. AWS processes this information to deliver the Website and to protect its infrastructure.
We have not enabled access logging, so we do not store these requests ourselves. AWS may process them for security and operational purposes as described in its own privacy notice.
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in providing a secure, working website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; for Switzerland, the FADP).
2. Cookies and browser storage
The Analytics preferences banner offers acceptance, rejection and a link to this policy. We store your choice in your browser’s local storage (keycrumb.analytics-consent.v1) until you change it or clear browser storage. If storage is unavailable, your choice applies only to the current page.
Before acceptance, and after rejection, the Website does not load Google tracking resources or send Analytics events. Interactions before acceptance are discarded. After acceptance, Google Analytics uses _ga and _ga_* cookies to distinguish visits; we configure their lifetime to 60 days without extending it on each visit.
Choose Analytics settings in the footer to change your choice. Withdrawal disables tracking, clears applicable Analytics cookies and normally reloads the page to remove the loaded Google library. It does not delete previously collected data. If you have disabled JavaScript or the Website has no Analytics configuration, no Google tracking resources load.
If browser storage cannot save withdrawal, the site tries to remove the old acceptance. If that also fails, the current page keeps tracking disabled without reloading into stale acceptance. Browser storage must be cleared to remove an inaccessible old preference for future visits.
Optional website Analytics
With your consent, Google processes page visits, engagement, referring sources, browser/device information and approximate location. We also measure which website sections are viewed, and FAQ openings. These events use fixed identifiers. We do not send command text, clipboard contents, your cheat sheets or support correspondence to Analytics.
Download links may record a download click, file name, release version and button location. A click measures intent, not a completed installation.
Google Signals, advertising personalization and Google Ads links are disabled. User-level and event-level retention in our Analytics property is two months, without resetting user retention on new activity. Standard aggregated reports can remain available beyond this period; browser cookie lifetime and Analytics retention are separate settings.
Legal basis: your consent to optional Analytics (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR where applicable). You may reject or withdraw without losing access to the Website.
3. Contacting us by email
When you write to support@keycrumb.com, we receive your email address, your message and any information you include. We use it only to answer you and to handle your request. The mailbox is provided by Apple (iCloud Mail).
We keep correspondence only as long as needed to deal with your request, and delete it when it is no longer needed, unless we must keep it for legal reasons.
Legal basis: your request and our legitimate interest in answering it (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR; FADP).
4. The KeyCrumb app
The public alpha is a local reader for Markdown cheat sheets:
- It reads the files in the folder you choose on your Mac. Your sheets stay on your device and are never uploaded to us.
- It has no account, no analytics and no telemetry. Update requests do not contain your cheat sheets, folder paths or clipboard contents.
- Downloads from downloads.keycrumb.com are delivered by AWS as described in section 1.
The app uses Sparkle to check https://downloads.keycrumb.com/appcast.xml for updates, automatically about once a day when automatic checks are enabled or when you choose Check for Updates…. You can change automatic checking in Settings. Installing an update requires your approval by default.
AWS receives the IP address, requested URL and technical request information, including the app/update client version, needed to deliver the feed or update archive. System profiling is disabled. These requests use the hosting described in section 1; download access logging remains disabled. Network failures do not prevent local reading.
